Is it true that writers are pillagers of privacy? Yes. And it is also true that others get hurt along the way. But what are a few hurt feelings along the fiction trail? After all, thousands died to build the railroads; millions were crippled and wounded in wars that were presumably fought to create better worlds. Am I saying that the literary end justifies the means? I'm saying that writers had better believe it or else they'll be trapped in moral quicksand and swallowed up whole.

Our two boys are graduating this year. I went out tonight and took their senior pictures.   Nick's turned out well. I'm pleased with the results. Tyler's pictures showed more of his style. The next one isn't so much a senior picture as it is just a good picture.  And this:  His grass shots will probably be his senior pictures...    It was cool to do this with them. We might shoot some more later in a different light. |

Went to the park early in the morning before the heat got obscene and played around. Nick, Ali, Austin, and Jacob had fun... oh, and me too.  Ledges is a beautiful park with a stream that runs through it. I had expected that the water would be higher, but unfortunately not, as you can see.  Nevertheless, it was a good time.  And scenic...  Then off to my favorite city park, Brookside in Ames, Iowa. It sports huge oak trees and several playgrounds.  And if you're there long enough, the little guys get to see a train or two pass through. Which we did. Ali and Nick goofed around on a park bench.  I can't imagine the two of them breaking up. They're wonderful together, which is great to see for my son. Good way to start the day. |

Two of my sons, Nick and Aaron, are off to points north to spend time with their mom this summer. Which leaves only Bari and me in the house, with frequent visits from Jacob and Austin. Last night, I was working and Nick called me to ask if he could stop by on his way home. So he came with a gift - Father's Day is Sunday. He gave me a really cool card and a bunch of bananas, knowing my penchant for smoothies and my desire to continue losing weight. It was a great gift and the card was pretty touching. In preparation for my daughter leaving the roost, we started the game of musical bedrooms last night as they were waiting for their mom to arrive. Such a thing stirs up memories and laughter, and we had a good time of it. "Wow Dad," Nick said to me. "Pretty soon, it'll just be us guys."
"And then just me and you!" Aaron said.
"And then there was 1," I replied. It's an odd thing to consider. I'm well-adjusted to the summer migration of my older kids - it's been going on since the mid-90's. But not to the idea of an empty nest. Of course, that's a few years off yet. |

I've been home this morning with my son, Nick, who's had a reaction to the tetanus booster that he received yesterday. His throat constricted a bit, but he could breathe and swallow (although uncomfortably), so I've been watching him. He seems better now. While home, I decided to weed out the watercolor tubes that I have for what I want in my essential palette of colors. Schmid's book was very instrumental in this, not so much for color selection but for the idea that it is important to do this. Then I can later mix each color with another to see that it's what I need and what it produces. So here it is:  I initially bought Winsor & Newton's Cotman line of paints, but they're not only a bit streaky, the lids for the tubes are horrible and ill-fitting. I sent an email to Winsor & Newton about it and never heard back from them, so in the strongest manner I can, I dissuade anyone from purchasing Winsor & Newton or Cotman. I'm using Grumbacher Academy paints and I'm happy with those. Smooth, and the Grumbacher Red is the truest red that I've found. And the lids are lovely! So, since Nick is better, I'm off to take him to school and me to work. Hopefully sometime this week, I'll get back to painting. Sketching is cool and necessary practice, but I like colors. |
